BPM to Milliseconds Chart for Music Producers and Engineers

Whenever hardware outboard gear, vintage delay pedals, or compressor plugins lack a tempo-sync switch, millisecond timing tables become essential. Here is the master conversion chart.

The Core Equation

Because there are 60 seconds (60,000 milliseconds) in a minute, one quarter note (1 beat in 4/4 time) is calculated as:

Quarter Note (ms) = 60,000 รท BPM

Where to Apply Millisecond Values

  • Compressor Release Times: Set release to an 8th or 16th note value so the gain reduction needle recovers in rhythm with the groove.
  • Gated Reverb & Snare Envelopes: Set noise gate hold and release times to match quarter or 8th note durations.
  • Tape Delay & Slapback: Vintage analog tape echoes rarely have tempo lock; dial in exact 1/16 or 1/32 note delays for authentic vintage vibe.
  • Modulation Rates (Chorus, Flanger, Tremolo): Convert LFO frequency in Hz (where Hz = 1000 / ms) to create perfectly synchronized sweeps.
